Robert Lewandowski Receives Two-Year MLS Offer from Chicago Fire

Robert Lewandowski's next career move could take him to North America. The 37-year-old Barcelona forward has been presented with a two-year contract proposal from Chicago Fire, with his current deal at the Catalan club set to expire this June.

With his Barcelona tenure apparently coming to a close, the legendary Polish striker is considering his future options. Chicago Fire are making a determined effort to bring him across the Atlantic following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Spanish outlet SPORT reports that the Fire have already submitted a formal offer to Lewandowski. The proposal would position him as the centrepiece of their organization for the next two seasons. These discussions gained momentum after encouraging talks between the parties took place in December.

The negotiations advanced further when Lewandowski's representative, Pini Zahavi, recently met with Chicago Fire owner Joe Mansueto in London. The American club also possesses a crucial advantage in these talks - they control Lewandowski's discovery rights within Major League Soccer, granting them priority in any potential deal.

Chicago's Quest for European Star Power

Since German World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger retired in 2019, Chicago Fire have been on an unsuccessful hunt for another marquee European player. While rival MLS sides secured global superstars like Lionel Messi, Thomas Müller, and Son Heung-min, Chicago's attempts repeatedly fell short.

The franchise has previously pursued Brazilian sensation Neymar, Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, and another City star in Bernardo Silva. All declined the opportunity. Lewandowski now represents their most realistic shot at securing the transformative talent they've been seeking.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter appears enthusiastic about the potential acquisition. Though he won't publicly discuss ongoing negotiations, the former U.S. men's national team manager didn't hide his admiration for the striker.

"He's a fantastic player," Berhalter stated. "There is no player who has scored more goals than Robert Lewandowski in the last 15 years in the top five leagues. He does it everywhere he plays."

Impact on MLS Landscape and Playoff Contention

Should Lewandowski complete the transfer, it would represent a massive coup for both Chicago and the league itself. MLS saw departures last season with Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets both retiring, creating demand for additional world-class European arrivals.

Colombian playmaker James Rodríguez recently joined Minnesota United, but Lewandowski would carry even greater star power. His production remains exceptional - he netted 42 goals in 52 appearances last season as Barcelona captured the Spanish domestic treble.

Despite reduced minutes this campaign, Lewandowski has still tallied 13 goals across all competitions. That clinical finishing would overwhelm MLS backlines and immediately transform Chicago into a significantly more formidable playoff contender.

For a club that exited in the opening round of the 2025 MLS Cup playoffs, acquiring Lewandowski could elevate them from outsiders to genuine championship threats. Such a move would disrupt the established hierarchy currently dominated by Inter Miami, LAFC, and LA Galaxy.
