Maccabi Tel Aviv Manager Ronny Deila Faces Sexual Harassment Investigation
Former Celtic and New York City FC manager Ronny Deila is under investigation by Israeli authorities following allegations of sexual harassment against a female taxi driver in Tel Aviv during the early morning hours last Thursday.
The 50-year-old Norwegian, currently managing Maccabi Tel Aviv, addressed the allegations through Israeli broadcaster N12, stating: "I do not remember the details of the incident, as I had too much to drink." He issued apologies to the driver, the football club, and supporters.
Police Confirm Investigation Details
Tel Aviv police have confirmed that a foreign national matching Deila's age and position was questioned following a weekend complaint. The individual, identified only as a senior coach at a first-division club, was subsequently released but remains subject to restrictive conditions. The description aligns directly with Deila's circumstances.
In his public statement, Deila expressed remorse, saying the alleged behaviour contradicts his personal values while accepting full responsibility. However, his explanation centres heavily on memory loss due to alcohol consumption rather than addressing the specific allegations, a distinction observers have noted.
Second Incident in Recent Weeks
This marks the second time Deila's conduct off the pitch has made headlines in Israel. Just last month, reports surfaced claiming he was removed from a Berlin-themed establishment after allegedly mistreating staff who declined to serve him additional drinks. That incident reportedly involved police attendance as well.
The bar's management later disputed those claims entirely, insisting Deila behaved appropriately and that no such confrontation took place. No charges resulted from that situation.
Impact on Maccabi Tel Aviv's Season
Deila assumed control of Maccabi Tel Aviv in February, bringing former Rangers and Scotland international Kenny Miller on board as his assistant manager. The appointment represented a return to club football after his stint with MLS side New York City FC.
Having an active police investigation involving the club's manager creates an unwelcome distraction for one of Israeli football's most prominent institutions. As Maccabi pursue league honours, off-field controversies threaten to derail their focus during a critical stretch of the campaign.
Deila's coaching résumé includes two Scottish Premiership championships and a League Cup trophy during his tenure with Celtic. That professional reputation now faces scrutiny as attention shifts away from tactical matters and toward personal conduct.
