Endrick Reveals How Bellingham and Modric Guided Him Through Difficult First Year at Real Madrid
"Modric was the player who impressed me most at Real Madrid: 100%." Those are the words of Endrick — the 19-year-old Brazilian forward currently excelling on loan with Lyon in Ligue 1 — reflecting on a challenging debut season at the Bernabéu that could have overwhelmed a less resilient youngster.
In an open conversation with The Guardian, the talented striker offered rare insight into what it's really like inside one of football's most high-pressure environments. What he discovered defied his expectations.
Bellingham's warm welcome
When Endrick joined Madrid in 2024 at just 17 years old, he was thrust into a star-studded squad where he didn't speak the language and could have easily felt overlooked. Jude Bellingham ensured that never happened. "He made me feel welcome at the club. My English wasn't very good, but he talked to me, attempted some Spanish, stayed close and offered guidance," Endrick recalled.
The young Brazilian had certain assumptions about the English midfielder before their first meeting. Those assumptions quickly proved wrong. "He was totally different. He's an amazing player and an amazing person, especially as a friend." For a teenager adjusting to a new country and unfamiliar language, those words carry significant meaning.
Learning from a 40-year-old master
While Bellingham smoothed the off-field adjustment, it was Luka Modrić who truly influenced Endrick's development as a footballer. "He taught me so much during my first year. Not only in training sessions, but in actual matches too. It was like a football education."
What left the biggest impression on Endrick wasn't simply Modrić's talent — it was his unwavering work ethic. "He was 40 years old and incredibly fit. He trained every single day. Even when he wasn't selected, he'd come to the facility and train on his own, doing additional workouts." For a young player still learning what elite-level football requires, witnessing that dedication firsthand is invaluable.
"He was one of the most remarkable people I've encountered in football," Endrick stated. Powerful words. Well deserved.
Currently at Lyon, Endrick has registered seven goals and six assists in all competitions — statistics indicating the loan spell is achieving exactly what Madrid intended. Reports suggest Los Blancos are eager to recall him to the Spanish capital next season. Should that materialize, he'll return as a more complete player than when he departed — armed with a crystal-clear understanding of the standards demanded within that dressing room.
