Joey Barton Enters Not Guilty Plea in Golf Club Assault Case

Former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton has formally denied charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The 43-year-old appeared via video link from Liverpool prison during Tuesday's hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, entering his not guilty plea.

Both Barton and co-accused Gary O'Grady, 50, face charges connected to an alleged assault that took place on March 8 at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club in Merseyside. The alleged victim has been publicly identified as Kevin Lynch, who previously managed at the non-league football level. While O'Grady attended the court proceedings in person, he did not enter a plea at this time.

Remanded in custody pending trial

Barton's physical absence from the courtroom speaks volumes about the severity of the allegations. After being denied bail during an earlier magistrates court appearance, he participated in Tuesday's plea and trial preparation hearing remotely from Liverpool prison—a clear indication of how seriously the British legal system views these charges.
