Orlando Pirates and Nigerian Defender Olisa Ndah Agree to Part Ways
Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of Nigerian centre-back Olisa Ndah through mutual consent. The 28-year-old defender exits the South African giants despite having remaining time on his existing deal.
The separation represents an amicable agreement between both parties, with the club and player recognizing that moving forward separately serves everyone's best interests.
Ndah arrived at Pirates in 2021 from Nigerian side Akwa United and swiftly established himself as a cornerstone of the club's backline. Supporters appreciated his calm demeanour with the ball at his feet and commanding physical presence during crucial fixtures in both domestic and continental action.
However, the past 12 months proved challenging for the defender. Persistent injury setbacks severely restricted his availability on the pitch. He failed to register any minutes during the current campaign, with his final outing coming in September 2024 during a comfortable 3-0 victory over Polokwane City.
The Reasoning Behind the Departure
Pirates' official announcement revealed that Ndah personally sought an early exit to secure consistent first-team football elsewhere. The organization honoured his transparent approach and ambition to maintain career momentum.
"The Club respects Ndah's desire for increased minutes on the field," the statement from Pirates noted, while commending his professional conduct throughout negotiations.
Increased competition within the squad played a role as well. Emerging defenders including Mbokazi and Lebone Seema have been challenging for regular starting positions. Following his fitness setbacks, reclaiming a spot in the starting eleven would have proven extremely difficult for Ndah.
His Legacy at the Club
Ndah's contributions during his three-and-a-half-year tenure in South Africa deserve recognition. He recorded 81 total appearances across all competitions, with 73 of those coming as a starter. He even found the scoresheet once, netting against SuperSport United in the 2024 MTN8.
His trophy collection tells its own story. Ndah captured the MTN8 Cup on three separate occasions with Pirates. He also contributed significantly during the club's impressive campaigns in both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
He now becomes a free agent, granting him the flexibility to sign with any team of his choosing, even beyond the January transfer period deadline. For clubs seeking defensive reinforcement mid-season, he represents a seasoned choice with extensive knowledge of African football.
For Pirates, this decision creates roster flexibility and potentially frees up salary cap space. The club will rely on their younger defenders to fill the void. Those following the Premier Soccer League should monitor how the Pirates' backline copes without Ndah's veteran presence in upcoming matches.
The Nigerian defender's future destination remains uncertain. However, after representing one of the continent's most prestigious clubs, he exits with his professional standing intact and considerable ability still to showcase.
