Oscar Hangs Up His Boots at 34 Following Life-Threatening Cardiac Episode
Brazilian midfielder Oscar has officially called time on his professional career at age 34, following a terrifying cardiac arrest during a São Paulo training session last November that nearly cost him his life.
"My blood pressure was plummeting, my heart was stopping. They performed cardiac massage on me," Oscar recalled, describing the harrowing moment that would ultimately force him into retirement. It wasn't an injury, a transfer dispute, or a gradual decline that ended his playing days—it was his heart giving out on the training pitch.
The former Chelsea star confirmed his decision to retire on Saturday, a choice that, given the circumstances, was inevitable.
A distinguished career across the globe
Oscar's professional resume speaks for itself: 556 appearances, 136 goals, and 203 assists across stints with São Paulo, Internacional, Chelsea, and Shanghai SIPG. His journey took him from Brazilian football to the bright lights of the Premier League, before he became one of the marquee signings during China's lavish spending spree on foreign talent.
On the international stage, Oscar earned 48 caps for Brazil, netting 12 goals and securing an Olympic medal at London 2012. Far from being a peripheral figure, Oscar was among the most well-rounded midfielders of his era—equally adept at orchestrating attacks, finding the back of the net, and setting up teammates.
He had been under contract with São Paulo through 2027, with plans to conclude his career where it all began. Fate had different plans.
The moment everything changed
Speaking about the syncope episode with remarkable composure, Oscar described an experience that borders on the surreal. "People say that when you're dying, you leave your body. I experienced some of those sensations. You're unconscious, trapped in a dream that feels strangely peaceful."
Then came the cardiac massage. Then, his son's voice breaking through.
"I could see my son speaking, as if he was saying: 'Come back, dad.'"
Oscar hasn't stepped onto a pitch since that day. Now, he never will.
São Paulo are left with a significant void to fill, having built their midfield around a player signed to a long-term deal. The loss extends beyond just his on-field contributions—Oscar's homecoming carried immense symbolic value for the club and its supporters. The fairytale ending everyone envisioned has been replaced by a sobering reminder of football's fragility, and a training ground that nearly witnessed an unthinkable tragedy.
