PSG Pursues Additional Silverware at Laureus Awards Following Historic 2025 Campaign
Paris Saint-Germain's remarkable 2025 season may have one more chapter to write. The French powerhouse could secure another piece of silverware next month when the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards take place in Madrid on April 20.
The club's trophy collection from the 2024-2025 campaign was nothing short of extraordinary. PSG achieved the rare sextuple, claiming Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and the Trophée des Champions. Six major trophies in a single season cemented their place in football history.
The Laureus ceremony, which has celebrated excellence in sport for over a quarter-century, has recognized PSG's achievements with three nominations spanning multiple categories.
French Stars Among Elite Athletes
Ousmane Dembélé has earned a nomination for male sportsperson of the year, competing against an impressive field that includes tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, pole vault legend Mondo Duplantis, MotoGP champion Marc Márquez, and cycling phenomenon Tadej Pogačar. The French winger's inclusion among such distinguished athletes speaks volumes about his standout season.
Meanwhile, emerging talent Désiré Doué has been shortlisted for world breakthrough of the year. The young midfielder faces competition from Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris and four other rising stars across various sports. It's impressive recognition for a player in just his breakthrough campaign.
The most significant nomination sees PSG competing for world team of the year. Their rivals include England's women's national football squad (European champions), the European Ryder Cup team, McLaren F1, India's women's cricket team, and NBA champions Oklahoma City Thunder.
Prestigious Selection Process
The Laureus Awards maintain rigorous standards for selecting winners. More than 1,000 sports media representatives from over 70 countries participate in the initial voting process. Subsequently, the Laureus World Sports Academy—comprising legendary athletes from various disciplines—determines the final winners.
Football enthusiasts will note nine former players serving on the Academy: Brazilian icon Cafu, Italian maestros Alessandro Del Piero and Francesco Totti, French legend Marcel Desailly, Spanish defenders Carles Puyol and Raúl, Portuguese star Luís Figo, Welsh wizard Ryan Giggs, and Dutch great Ruud Gullit. These football legends will play a role in determining whether PSG takes home additional hardware.
The sustained success and international recognition could influence PSG's standing heading into future campaigns. Manager Luis Enrique has constructed something truly special in the French capital, and these nominations provide further validation of the club's excellence.
Interestingly, back in May 2023, Lionel Messi captured the male sportsperson award following Argentina's World Cup victory. Despite the ceremony taking place in Paris and Messi being contracted to PSG at the time, the Argentine notably omitted any mention of the club during his acceptance speech.
All eyes turn to Madrid on April 20, where the sporting world will discover if PSG's golden year receives one final seal of approval.
