Liverpool Legend Steve Nicol Auctions Iconic FA Cup Medal for £20,000
Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol is putting his prized 1986 FA Cup winner's medal up for auction, with estimates placing the value between £10,000 and £20,000. The Scottish defender earned this hardware in Liverpool's dramatic 3-1 victory over Everton in the all-Merseyside final at Wembley Stadium.
After spending 13 remarkable seasons at Anfield, collecting three FA Cup titles, a European Cup trophy, and being named FWA Footballer of the Year, Nicol is now parting ways with key pieces from his storied career.
London-based Propstore auction house will host the sale between April 21 and May 14, featuring over 50 items from throughout Nicol's playing days. While the FA Cup medal tops the collection, several other significant pieces are expected to draw substantial interest from collectors.
Featured Items in the Auction
- 1986 FA Cup winner's medal — Estimated at £10,000 to £20,000
- 1984 European Cup winner's medal (Liverpool's penalty shootout triumph over Roma at Stadio Olimpico) — Estimated at £8,000 to £16,000
- 1989 FA Cup final match-worn shirt (Liverpool vs Everton) — Estimated at £3,000 to £6,000
- 1989 FWA Footballer of the Year trophy — Estimated at £2,000 to £4,000
- 1988 Scotland vs England Rous Cup jersey — Estimated at £1,000 to £2,000
- MLS All-Star shirt featuring signatures from David Beckham and Landon Donovan — Estimated at £400 to £800
The European Cup medal carries immense historical significance. Liverpool's penalty shootout victory over Roma in Rome in 1984 remains one of the club's most memorable European nights. Interestingly, despite its importance, market dynamics suggest the FA Cup medal will command higher prices, largely due to greater domestic collector demand for Merseyside derby memorabilia.
Why Nicol is Selling Now
"These items hold many personal memories," Nicol explained, "but I'm pleased to be offering them through Propstore, where they'll go to fans and collectors who share that passion for the game."
Now 64 years old, Nicol departed Liverpool in the mid-1990s for brief spells with Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday, and Doncaster Rovers before relocating to the United States in 1999 to pursue opportunities in Major League Soccer. The signed All-Star jersey from his time Stateside adds an interesting North American dimension to a career predominantly defined by his achievements at Anfield.
According to Propstore specialist Alastair McCrea: "It's not often that material of this quality and provenance becomes available." For serious collectors, this represents a rare opportunity. For football fans who witnessed Nicol's excellence during Liverpool's dominance of English football in the late 1980s, it's a chance to acquire authentic pieces from that golden era.
International bidding is now open. The premium placed on the FA Cup medal alone positions this as one of the most significant Liverpool memorabilia auctions in recent memory.
