Widow Claims Burnley FC 'Bullied' Matt Beard in Final Months Before Manager's Death

"I feel they bullied him, to be honest." These powerful words from Debbie Beard at a pre-inquest hearing on Thursday described her late husband Matt Beard's experience at Burnley Football Club during the final months of his life.

The renowned women's football manager passed away on September 20, 2025, at age 47 at the Countess of Chester Hospital following a hypoxic brain injury. Beard had been named Burnley Women's manager in June 2025 but departed the role just two months later. He never secured another position.

"Matt left Burnley not to go to another job," Debbie testified at Ruthin Coroner's Office in Denbighshire. "He left Burnley because he was not happy there. Basically, they didn't allow him to move on."

Inquest Postponed Pending Additional Evidence

Senior coroner John Gittins determined that "further work needs doing" before proceeding with the full inquest. Statements have already been gathered from Burnley and Leicester City Women — the latter reportedly interested in hiring Beard following his Burnley departure — along with medical records from his general practitioner. Additional inquiries will be directed toward agent Curtis Dawes and the League Managers Association, both of whom had contact with Beard in his final weeks. Burnley FC will be invited to participate as an interested party in the proceedings.

The family is also requesting that a video recorded by Beard before his death be submitted as evidence. This request underscores the family's determination to ensure a complete account is documented.

Beard's family has clearly identified his departure from Burnley as a "catalyst" in the deterioration of his mental health. Debbie described her husband as someone who concealed his struggles — "He was the type of person who would say, 'yes, I'm fine', and he wouldn't admit it. You could see it in his manner at home."

Legacy of Excellence in Women's Football

Beard's managerial career spanned 17 years across Millwall, Chelsea, Liverpool, Boston Breakers, West Ham, Bristol City, and a second stint with Liverpool. He secured consecutive Women's Super League titles with Liverpool between 2012 and 2014, then returned in 2021 to win the Women's Championship and secure promotion. During the 2023-24 campaign, he led Liverpool to fourth place in the WSL and earned his second manager of the season award.

Just last month, Beard was inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame. While the recognition seemed overdue given his significant contributions to the sport, it did eventually arrive. What never came was the opportunity to rebuild following his departure from Burnley.

A date for the full inquest has not yet been scheduled.
